Call for Papers: Session 1 (SBL 2024)

Session 1: Movement in and beyond the Ancient Mediterranean: Migrants, Tourists, Pilgrims, Travelers.

In recent decades, scholarly attention has increasingly turned to different modes of movement in premodernity, and the effects that movement had on the social, cultural, and religious life of persons and peoples. This session seeks to build on such scholarship by exploring how the movement of individuals and people groups, whether forced (e.g., through exile, displacement, or natural disaster) or voluntary (e.g., in pilgrimage, travel, or by way of imperial expansion), transformed religion within and beyond the ancient Mediterranean. Papers might, for example, examine constructions of diaspora; migration and religious hybridity; the movement of ritual practices; cult translations, and adaptations to deities; or other topics related to religion and geographical movement.
